From Grief to Growth: Lila’s Path to Pharmacy and Purpose

Meet Lila Parish, a passionate fourth-year Pharm.D. student at Auburn University’s Harrison College of Pharmacy. During her APPE rotation with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Lila opened up about her inspiring journey to find the right pharmacy school and how, with the guidance of mentors, she discovered her true “Pharmily.”

How Did You Choose Your Pharmacy School?

Choosing a pharmacy school involved several factors. I considered each program’s accreditation status, reputation, faculty expertise, student engagement opportunities, and focus on diversity. It was essential for me to find a school that offered an exceptional education and fostered a sense of belonging and community. I discovered all of this at Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy. From my first inquiry, Auburn made me feel like part of their “Pharmily.”

Why Did You Decide to Pursue a Career in Pharmacy?

Pharmacy is actually my second career. After losing a loved one due to a medication error, I was motivated to pursue a career in the medical field and make a meaningful impact. Pharmacy allows me to merge my passion for biochemistry with the ability to improve people’s lives. It’s a profession that offers a unique opportunity to blend science and compassion.

Who Helped You Explore Career Paths?

My undergraduate mentors and professors played a crucial role in helping me explore various career paths within the medical field. I also proactively reached out to local pharmacists to learn about their real-world experiences. I utilized my school’s career center resources to explore pharmacy further. Their guidance helped me make informed decisions about my future.

What’s Your Favorite Part of Pharmacy School?

The best part of pharmacy school is giving back to my community. I enjoy educating people about the many services pharmacists offer beyond just filling prescriptions. The scope of pharmacy is growing and expanding into every major industry, from healthcare to tech-driven pharmaceutical care. Being part of this transformation is inspiring.

What’s the Most Challenging Part?

Pharmacy school requires a significant commitment—mentally, emotionally, and academically. As a non-traditional student, finding a balance between home, work, and school has been the most challenging aspect for me. However, having a solid support system and keeping my personal motivations in mind has helped me navigate these challenges.

What Do You Wish You Knew Before Applying?

One misconception I had was that a bachelor’s degree is required for all pharmacy schools—but that’s not the case. Many programs offer bridge programs that combine undergraduate coursework with the Pharm.D. degree. Knowing this would have streamlined my path and helped me plan accordingly.

What’s Your Advice for Future Pharmacy Students?

Start by conducting outreach and research. Get in touch with your school’s counselor or career center to explore resources. Connect with local pharmacists, or reach out to pharmacies for shadowing opportunities. Create a list of what you’re looking for in a program and use it to narrow down your options.
