Turning Loss into Purpose: My Journey to a Pharmacy Career to Make a Difference

Meet Lila, a compassionate and determined fourth-year Pharm.D. student at Auburn University Harrison College of Pharmacy. During her APPE rotation with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Lila opened her heart and shared the deeply personal story that inspired her to pursue pharmacy—a journey marked by loss, resilience, and the discovery of a new family she now calls her “Pharmily.”

How did you choose your pharmacy school or graduate program?

When I started exploring pharmacy schools, I knew I wasn’t just choosing a program—I was choosing a home. I carefully considered things like accreditation, faculty expertise, research opportunities, and how each school supported student diversity and inclusion. But what mattered just as much to me was the feeling of belonging.

From the very first time I reached out to Auburn, something just clicked. The warmth in their response, the genuine interest they showed in me as a person—it all made me feel like I had found my people. They didn’t just welcome me into a program; they welcomed me into a “Pharmily.” And that feeling still holds true today.

Why did you decide to pursue your career in pharmacy?

This career path wasn’t my first—it was born from pain. I lost someone I loved due to a medication error. That loss left a hole in my heart but also lit a fire within me. I realized then that I wanted to be part of the solution, to work in a field where I could protect and educate others.

Pharmacy gave me the perfect intersection of my passion for biochemistry and my desire to make a meaningful impact. It gave me a purpose—to ensure that what happened to my loved one never happens to someone else’s.

Who guided you as you explored this path?

I owe so much to the mentors and professors from my undergrad days. They saw something in me—even before I did. They encouraged me to look deeper into careers where science meets service.

I also took the initiative to visit my university’s career center and set up informational interviews with local pharmacists. Just hearing their stories—the why behind what they do—was both grounding and inspiring. Their experiences helped shape my vision of what pharmacy could be.

What’s your favorite part of pharmacy school?

Without a doubt—giving back. One of the most fulfilling parts of my journey has been engaging with my community and helping people understand the powerful role a pharmacist can play in their lives.

Pharmacy touches nearly every corner of healthcare—and being able to educate others, advocate for their needs, and provide real solutions feels like a privilege every single day.

What’s been the most challenging part of this journey?

Balancing it all. I’m what you’d call a non-traditional student, so juggling family, work, and school hasn’t been easy.

Pharmacy school demands a lot—mentally, emotionally, and physically. There were days I questioned if I could keep up. But through perseverance (and lots of coffee), I found my rhythm. Learning how to give myself grace was just as important as learning the curriculum.

What do you wish you had known before applying to pharmacy school?

One big thing? Not every pharmacy school requires a bachelor’s degree to apply! I used to think that was a universal rule, but it’s not. Some programs even offer flexible “bridge” paths where you can complete your degree while earning your Pharm.D.

Doing your homework on admission requirements early on can save you time, energy, and money. I wish I had known that sooner.

What advice would you give to future pharmacy students?

Believe in yourself. Seriously—you’ve got this.

Here’s my best advice:

  • Start with outreach. Talk to your school’s career center or a counselor. They usually have resources that can help you explore if pharmacy is the right fit.
  • Find a pharmacist to talk to. Most of them love sharing their journey and can even offer shadowing opportunities. Don’t be afraid to call a local pharmacy and ask.
  • List your priorities. What kind of environment do you thrive in? What values matter to you in a program? Use those to guide your school search.
  • Visit the campus if possible. Feel the energy. Meet the students and faculty. Trust your gut—vibes matter!
  • Prep for interviews. Have an elevator pitch ready. And remember: You’re interviewing them too. Ask thoughtful questions. Make sure they fit you.

Above all—be confident. You’re not just applying to pharmacy school—you’re stepping into a future where you’ll truly make a difference. And that? That’s powerful.
