Every June, we celebrate Pride Month—a time to honor, uplift, and recognize the LGBTQ+ community. But for healthcare professionals, particularly pharmacists, allyship goes far beyond rainbow flags and social media posts. It’s about providing inclusive, affirming, and respectful care—365 days a year.
In a profession where trust and communication are essential, pharmacists across the country are embracing their role as allies. Here’s how they’re stepping up to ensure every patient feels seen, heard, and respected.
Why Language Matters in the Pharmacy

Words are powerful. The way pharmacists speak to and about their patients shapes the kind of care they deliver—and how comfortable someone feels seeking it. That’s why more and more pharmacists are taking steps to create inclusive spaces, starting with something as simple as introducing themselves with their pronouns or wearing pronoun pins.
They’re also attending training sessions and workshops to stay up-to-date on inclusive language. What was once considered acceptable may no longer be—and continuous learning is part of providing compassionate care.
Here are a few terms that are helping pharmacists better understand and support their LGBTQ+ patients:
Sexual Orientations
- Heterosexual: Attraction to people of a different gender.
- Bisexual / Pansexual: Attraction to people of more than one gender.
- Lesbian: A woman attracted to other women.
- Gay: A man attracted to other men; also widely used as an umbrella term.
- Queer: A broad term that encompasses a variety of LGBTQ+ identities.
Gender Identity
- Transgender: Describes people whose gender identity differs from the one assigned at birth.
- Cisgender: People whose gender identity matches their assigned sex at birth.
- Transgender Man/Woman: Identifies as a man or woman, respectively, but was assigned the opposite gender at birth.
- Genderqueer / Gender-Fluid: Rejecting rigid gender norms in favor of fluid identity.
- Gender Expression: How a person presents their gender outwardly.
- Gender Transition: The process someone undergoes to align with their true gender identity.
Confronting Healthcare Disparities
Sadly, LGBTQ+ individuals still face barriers when it comes to accessing healthcare that feels safe and affirming. Stigma, discrimination, and fear often keep people from getting the treatment they need. But pharmacists are stepping up to help close that gap.
They’re doing this by:
- Offering information about prescription assistance programs.
- Educating themselves on conditions that disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ patients—such as HIV, hormone therapy needs, or mental health issues.
- Building referral networks of inclusive providers in their communities.
- Creating pharmacy environments where patients can discuss sensitive health concerns without fear or judgment.
Inclusive Pharmacies in Action
Across the country, some pharmacies are leading the way in redefining what inclusivity in healthcare really looks like.
At Macomb Pharmacy in Michigan, patients are welcomed with open arms—and their website proudly reflects that commitment. Resources, information, and partnerships are clearly laid out to signal one thing: you belong here.
The Los Angeles LGBT Center goes even further. With an on-site pharmacy and full medical services under one roof, they’ve built a radically inclusive model of care where LGBTQ+ patients can find everything they need—without ever feeling like outsiders.
And in San Francisco, pharmacists Christina Garcia, Pharm.D., and her partner Patricia “PJ” Nachman founded TIN Rx Pharmacy—a pharmacy built from the ground up with LGBTQ+ patients in mind. For them, inclusivity wasn’t an afterthought. It was the foundation.
Being an Ally Means Showing Up—Every Day
True allyship is not a checklist—it’s a commitment. Pharmacists are proving that inclusive care isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being present, informed, and compassionate.
This Pride Month, we celebrate those in pharmacy who are doing just that. Not just with words, but with actions that make healthcare safer, more welcoming, and more human—for everyone.
